DESOTO - Third-grade Gifted and Talented Eagle students at Amber Terrace
Elementary have been involved in a math enrichment program called _Math Makes
Cents_.
Math Makes Cents
is a comprehensive program that uses the principles and habits of fashion design
and entrepreneurship to strengthen measurement and algebraic thinking skills.
Under the guidance of master leather craftsmen Arthur Porter of Dallas Designing
Dreams, students measured a leather hide, calculated the perimeter and area,
estimated how many backpacks could be made from one hide, determined the
fractional part of supplies used for each backpack and finally constructed their
own leather backpack.
The students who participated in _Math Makes Cents_ had a great time applying
mathematics to a real life, and took away a memento they will always remember.
