DALLAS AND ELLIS COUNTIES - The third Monday of January every year marks the
observance to remember a man who paved the way for many civil liberties African
Americans have today.
To honor the man who was assassinated at the age of 39 and most famous for his
"I have a dream" speech, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is now celebrated by all 50
states in the United States of America.
To mark the occasion, cities around the county are celebrating in their own way.
Cedar Hill
Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Jan.18
The Zula B. Wylie Library will be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. with
stories, "I Have a Dream" speech performed by Mr. Jimmy Pierre, and songs by Ms.
Audrey Anderson. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. in the library meeting room.
Desoto
In honor of the memory and contributions of Dr.Martin Luther King,Jr., the
special events staff invites you to view a pictorial exhibit on display in the
lobby of DeSoto City Hall from Jan. 15 through Feb. 1.
Lancaster
Lancaster Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation Sixth annual Parade
Line up begins at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. Jan. 16, at the
Lancaster Elsie Robertson Middle School 822 Pleasant Run Road.
The parade will travel East on Pleasant Run Rd one mile.
North onto Dallas Ave. Proceeding on to the Lancaster High School indoor sports
complex.
Immediately following the parade there will be a brief program including short
excerpts from Dr. King's speeches, and interesting facts about his life, an
Awards ceremony, participation from all elementary schools of Lancaster, and a
band competition.
The auditorium will be available in case of poor weather.
Waxahachie
Parade and re-enactment
Parade starts Jan. 18 on the downtown historic courthouse steps at 3 p.m. which
will end up at the Freeman Memorial Park around 3:30 p.m. where Councilman Chuck
Beatty's nephew will re-enact the famous "I have a dream" speech.
