The Ellis County Press: Halal slaughterhouse in violation if built Halal slaughterhouse in violation if built ================================================================================ Editor on 12/26/2009 23:57:00 STAFF REPORT The Ellis County Press ENNIS - County officials told a Muslim man his intentions to build any portion of a slaughterhouse on his property on Slama Road in Southern Ellis County would be illegal due to county commissioners rejecting the proposal Nov. 23. In a 5-0 vote amid a sea of opposition and an array of Dallas television cameras last month, commissioners rejected the plans to have an Islamic halal slaughterhouse capable of handling 10,000. Opponents cited the lack of quality roads, noise and pollution concerns as their reasons for having it constructed. Shamsul Ahmed told KDFW Fox 4 reporter Brandon Todd and Arabic news network Al-Jazeera, both in attendance at the commissioners meeting, he planned to build the slaughterhouse to take "custom orders." Ahmed also told KXAS Channel 5 his plant was not going to be a processing venue, merely a slaughterhouse for goats, cattle and sheep.
