The Ellis County Press: 4th grader Ruby Young wins DeSoto ISD Spelling Bee 4th grader Ruby Young wins DeSoto ISD Spelling Bee ================================================================================ Editor on 12/17/2009 15:12:00 It took an amazing 17 rounds of increasingly difficult words to crown the DeSoto Independent School District Spelling Bee champion this year - but Kaylie Cooper held on by spelling ‘scruple' to win. The proud fourth grader from Ruby Young Elementary held off close competition by her peers including runner-up Precious Anih, from Woodridge Elementary, during the afternoon competition Dec. 10. The annual event, hosted by the DeSoto ISD Reading Department, includes participants from all seven elementary schools and three middle schools which held school competitions last week. The event is open to all 4th through 8th graders in the district. Kaylie will represent DeSoto ISD at the Dallas County Spelling Bee in February to attempt to qualify for the _Dallas Morning News_ hosted Regional Spelling Bee in March. Regional qualifiers from across the country will then compete at the Scripts National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. the last week of May.
