AUSTIN - Governor Rick Perry R-Austin, called for a special election to fill the
Senate District 22 seat vacated by Sen. Kip Averritt to be held on Saturday, May
8.
Averitt resigned from his seat officially Wednesday, March 17 stating the reason
for his leaving was out of concern for his health. Averitt's doctor described
him as a "walking heart attack."
Darren Yancy R-Burl-eson, who brought in roughly 40 percent of the votes across
the state during the Republican Primaries March 2 has decided to run again to
fill the remainder of Averitt's term.
Yancy said there are several factors in consideration for his running again
including traditional family values and an understanding of the needs in
education in public schools.
"We need individuals in the senate that can work budgets, identify areas of
waste, understand how laws impact small business and think outside the box in
ways to create non-tax based revenues," said Yancy.
Former state Sen. David Sibley R-Waco, has joined the race against Yancy
according to several reports stating "many in the district have asked about my
interest in the position and I am honored they would consider me."
Candidates for this special election must file applications with the Secretary
of State no later than 5 p.m. on April 7.
Early voting runs from April 26 to May 4.
If elected, the candidate will serve out the remainder of Averitt's term that
expires January 2011.
