MIDLOTHIAN - School board members debated recent media coverage from _USA Today_
about the Midlothian Independent School District's air quality, which the
article rated as having some of the worst air pollution in the nation.
Midlothian Councilman Ken Chambers, among others, spoke to trustees at their
Jan. 19 meeting and asked for a public forum to be held for residents and
taxpayers to discuss the issue.
"Your [MISD] release stated there is no need to be concerned about the air that
students are breathing," said Chambers.
Superintendent J.D. Kennedy said he has requested monitors from the Texas
Commission of Environmental Quality to be placed on campuses so he can check the
quality himself.
Meanwhile, Texas Industries requested a renewal for a hazardous waste permit
from TCEQ for their existing cement plant in Midlothian, according to the legal
notices section of _The Dallas Morning News_ on Dec. 17, 2008.
The board didn't have any air quality solutions written at the time of Monday's
meeting, but the board approved the forming of a sub-committee consisting of
trustees Jay Roberts, Wayne Shuffield and Tom Moore to work on a resolution to
be proposed during next month's meeting.
The _USA Today_ article, which came out Dec. 10, reported on the air quality of
more than 100,000 campuses nationwide, with two schools from Midlothian alone.
