Liquor, $1.35 billion bond on ballot

WILMER - The City of Wilmer wants voters to reject the Dallas Independent School
District's $1.35 billion bond election May 10. Early voting ends Tuesday, but
with a bond debt of $1.5 billion, City Secretary Crystol Birdwell urged voters
to reject the proposals, which, if approved, would re-open a school north of
where the Wilmer-Hutchins ISD used to operate and pave the way for construction
of numerous other campuses in DISD.
"If we reject this bond, we'll be able to [re-open] our own school district in
two years," Birdwell said.
The other contentious election proposal on the ballot, Birdwell said, is a
packaged liquor proposition being voted on now. Though not aware of any
organized opposition to the measure, if passed, liquor would be legally allowed
in convenience stores.
