The Ellis County Press: Toys delight needy families Toys delight needy families ================================================================================ Editor on 12/27/2007 00:00:00 Jeff Hamilton _The Ellis County Press_ WAXAHACHIE - Dozens of volunteers arrived at sun up on Dec. 22 to unload, organize and distribute more than 1,500 toys to more than 250 needy families living in Ellis County. Guests were permitted to select two toys and a stocking stuffer for each child. VFW Post 3894 was assisted in its efforts by the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program along with the Mens and Womens Auxillaries. More than 180 families attended personally and several dozens more benefitted through donations made to the Waxahachie, Midlothian and Forreston Fire Departments. The Mens Auxillary provided free pictures with Santa Claus - with several event volunteers taking advantage to meet the jolly old elf himself. Lines formed early that morning as families eagerly awaited their chance to peruse the awesome display of dolls, games, electronic cars and other fabulous toys. The first 40 families were also allowed to choose one of several gorgeous bicycles per household. The event was fast and furious and there were many expressions of thanks in the form of hugs, tears and cheers. The VFW, located in Waxahachie puts on the toy drive each year to assist those less fortunate. While this is one of their larger undertakings, the post also delivers Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets to dozens of area households along with participating in numerous other community focused philanthropic activities. Additionally, volunteers gathered early on Sunday, Dec. 23 to organized and deliver the more than two dozen gift baskets for this years years selected residents.
