FERRIS - Local teenage boy Bennie Lively, 14, recently completed his Eagle Scout
Project by helping out a local church.
As member of Troop 714 for three years and a freshman at Highland Park High
School, Lively was working toward his Eagle Scout badge, which was the highest
rank a Boy Scout could achieve, when he chose to design a metal sign for the
Lone Star Cowboy Church, 1011 E. Ovilla Road.
It took Lively about 28 hours to design and complete his project with the help
of his father, Kerry Lively of Ferris, and a friend.
With the machine and the exact measurements there were 'no mistakes.'
'It was wonderful quality time,' Bennie Lively said.
'The joy it brought to others was a joy for me.'
Influenced by his dad's passion for jewelry making, Bennie Lively took what he
learned as a child and teen about welding into his own hands.
Lively's father said, 'Cowboy Church Pastor Jon Coe wanted a cowboy on a horse
looking up at a star.'
Bennie Lively had an idea to add a star in the shape of a cross for the sign.
He was one of a few chosen from his troop to tour England for a week next summer
for the World Jamboree.
Lively's mom, Kristin Miller lives in Highland Park.
