Long-time constable ‘Bubba’ Curry resigns

MIDLOTHIAN - Precinct 4 Constable Perry 'Bubba' Curry is resigning his post
effective Dec. 8
Curry took office in January 1993 after being elected as the constable in the
Midlothian and Oak Leaf area.
He said he was resigning for several reasons.
On Dec. 10 he'll begin working as chief deputy in Tarrant County's Constable
precinct 7.
'There is nothing wrong with this office. This was a nothing office when I took
office and is now something.' Perry said.
'The offices of constables in Ellis County have gone about as far as they can.'
However there were other reasons Perry cited for leaving the county.
Tarrant County used a structured pay scale making the salaries significantly
higher than Ellis County, Perry said.
'In three years I will be no where near making here what I can make in Tarrant
County,' he said.
Planning to retire in the next five years, Perry said, the state's retirement
system is calculated on the highest three years of salaries.
So the more money he could earn before retirement would ensure he could retire
with a higher pension.
Curry has not been without his opponents through the years.
Rumors about Curry living at Lake Whitney in Hill County have dogged him since
his first term.
He doesn't deny having property at Lake Whitney.
He claimed it was just a weekend lake getaway and not his primary residence.
According to Curry, his primary residence was in Ovilla, where he was born and
raised.
'Politically I'm not done with Ellis County,' he said.
County commissioners are scheduled to meet Monday, Nov. 27 to consider Curry's
resignation.
'I will place the resignation on the agenda for the next Commissioner's Court
regular meeting,' Adams said.
'Once the Court has accepted his resignation, we will move forward on filling
the the elected position.'
A successor has not yet been named.
Curry said his deputy was interested in taking over the position, but noted he
did not have any influence on what person commissioners would ultimately pick to
fill Curry's unexpired term.
'My opinion doesn't really have any weight at all in it,' Curry said.
