AUSTIN - The Ellis County Press won first place in news writing and placed in
headline writing, general excellence and total sweepstakes points at the recent
Texas Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, an annual competition among
the state's weekly and daily newspapers.
The winning news story, written by ECP reporter Joey Dauben, centered on a
$99,819 maintenance shed for the Ellis County Sheriff's Department former County
Judge Al Cornelius authorized without coming before the commissioner's court.
Judges said The Ellis County Press had, 'Crisply written leads on stories that
are easy to read. Use of language is good and sometimes vigorous. Newsy topics
with flashes of real enterprise in the reporting.'
The ECP also took fourth place in the Headlines category in the Medium Large
Weeklies category, third place in General Excellence and third in Sweepstakes
(an averaging of all scores).
Editorial pages and classifieds were also given high marks.
