Patrolmen ‘add it up’ to solve burglary

OVILLA - Ovilla patrolmen, Michael McKenna and Nick Downs were recognized by
Police Chief Michael Moon for their work in solving a burglary at the regular
meeting of the City Council on Dec. 9. Chief Moon praised the actions of the
officers, and presented a letters of recognition to them.In October, an Ovilla
resident reported the burglary of a cache of guns from her home to the Ovilla
police.In the early hours of that same morning, Officer McKenna had followed and
stopped a suspicious vehicle for failure to use a turn signal in the Ashburne
Glenn housing division.
Officer McKenna had conducted a field interview of the man and woman in the car,
and a license plate check on the car.
To Officer McKenna and Officer Nick Downs, the two incidents were not just a
coincidence.
'We just added it up,' said McKenna.The man and woman were arrested on burglary
charges, and are being held in the Ellis County jail. Some of the guns were
recovered.Chief Moon said he had tried to surprise McKenna and Downs with his
presentation to the city council concerning their successful sleuthing.
Moon had asked the two patrolmen to attend the Council meeting, but did not tell
them a reason for being there.
McKenna said he and Downs had figured it out though. 'We put our heads together,
and we figured out it was probably something about solving the burglary,' said
McKenna.
