Candidate signs sprout as Nov. 7 election nears

Like mushrooms, candidates' signs are sprouting on roadsides and lawns across
Ellis County.
The Nov. 7 election is less than a month away. Typically now is the time voters
focus on candidates and issues.
At first glance, there may not seem much on the ballot. But two seats on the
Ellis County Commissioners Court are up for grabs. There's one constable race
and the question of a 30-percent raise for Sheriff's Department personnel.
Incumbent Commissioner Hallie Joe Robinson, a Democrat from Palmer, is being
challenged by Republican G.T. Morton of Waxahachie.
With Commissioner Charlie Waller not running in Precinct 3, voters will choose
between Democrat Sidney Osteen of Maypearl and Republican Jackie Miller Sr. of
Italy for the other available seat on the court.
Several Republican incumbents in major county offices are running unopposed-
378th District Judge Al Scroggins of Ennis, County Attorney Joe Grubbs of
Waxahachie, Tax Assessor/Collector John Bridges of Waxahachie and Sheriff Ray
Stewart of Midlothian.
Although county constable is open in all four pricincts, there is only one race.
Indumbent Bill Woody, a Democrat from Ennis, goes against Republican challenger
Richard Schmidt of Palmer.
Constable candidates in the other precincts are running unopposed - Terry L. Nay
of Waxahachie in Pct. 2, Jimmie E. Ray of Waxahachie in Pct. 3 and Perry (Bubba)
Curry in Pct. 4.
