The Ellis County Press: Why should parents vote? Why should parents vote? ================================================================================ Editor on 09/07/2000 00:00:00 RUSTY WELLER Ellis County Press Managing Editor Although students can't vote until age 18, they can help encourage their parents to cast their ballots in the Nov. 7 election. That's the thrust behind an essay contest asking students to write 'Why My Parents Should Vote.' Secretary of State Elton Bomer has asked the Ellis County Press and other Texas newspapers to encourage students of all grades to tell him why they think their parents should vote. All home-schooled, public and private students are urged to participate. For students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the essay length is 100 to 300 words. It's 400 or less for students in sixth through eighth grades and 500 words or less for students in ninth through 12th grades. If students need help writing their essays, they are urged to talk to their mom or dad about the importance of voting.
