The Ellis County Press: County to provide trigger locks to gun owners County to provide trigger locks to gun owners ================================================================================ Editor on 08/23/2000 00:00:00 JOHN CAPPS Ellis County Press WAXAHACHIE -- Sources at the Ellis County Sheriff´s Office told the Ellis County Press more than 2,000 trigger locks will soon be available to county residents at no charge. Ellis County Sheriff Ray Stewart said the locks are not mandatory for gun owners, but will be made available as a public service in hopes of reducing gun accidents. 'I especially encourage gun owners with children to consider use of the locks,' Stewart said. 'In my law enforcement career, I have worked perhaps seventy or eighty cases where children accidentally hurt themselves with weapons in the home. 'It is not Sheriff´s Office policy to discourage gun ownership by responsible citizens,' Stewart said. 'Our only intent is to reduce tragic accidents and the misuse of firearms.' Steward added 'It is too early for gun owners to contact the Sheriff´s agency to obtain a lock. The trigger locks have not yet arrived, but when they do a program for orderly distribution will be announced.'
