Citizen calls for mayor's resignation

WILMER – “I have a letter asking for the resignation of the mayor,” said
Brian Sliter during the citizen comments portion of the council meeting
Thursday, Aug. 18.
“Come see me.”
Sliter is known for creating headlines nationwide when he ran for the mayor’s
seat himself in 2008, running for public office as a registered sex offender.
When contacting Mayor Jeff Steele for comment, he said whomever is behind this
isn’t aware of law.
“If they know the law they can petition all they want,” said Mayor Jeff
Steele.
“It’s just upsetting the peace and demeanor of our city.”
While not wanting to comment on anything pen-ding, Steele confirmed  Dallas
District Attorney Craig Watkins has been notified of various actions by newer
members on council.
The new council was voted in this May and includes Mayor Pro Tem Hector Pena,
Councilman Robert Wells and Councilwoman Candy Madrigal.
They too, have filed a lawsuit, this one against Steele.
“He is a liar and contradicts himself,” said Pena.
“You see what I have to deal with?”
Pena and Steele have been at odds with each other since before Pena won election
in May and now Pena wants to know why he can’t have items he requests on the
agenda , including key city administrators.
“The current new council needs to know they act as legislators and not
administrators,” said Steele.
“There has been no evidence as to why we should be pulling dedicated city
employees before council.”
Steele mentioned until there is some basis on what and why employees need to be
put on the agenda, it’s not relevant to an open discussion.
According to Steele, the former council filed a similar lawsuit against him
three years ago.
“They [former council] are no longer here and we will see the outcome of the
courtroom once again.”
