According to a statement released by the Texas Highway Patrol, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 1:23 a.m. that morning regarding a possible body lying on the roadway of southbound Interstate Highway 45 between Mile Markers 259-260. Local police searched the area but were not able to locate anything. About an hour later, a second call came in concerning an animal, possibly a deer or large dog, on the roadway of southbound IH-45 near Mile Marker 263. When police arrived on the scene, they discovered a body of a young male ran over several times before being found. The 22-year-old male was identified as Jeremy Elton Lofton. Police determined Lofton had made a purchase at a store in Ferris at 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, with video recovered during the investigation. It’s believed Lofton was walking on or near the shoulder of Southbound IH-45 and pulling a small, dark colored rolling suitcase when he was hit.
