The Ellis County Press: Government education Government education ================================================================================ Editor on 05/21/2008 21:07:00 The three branches of government are the executive, judicial and legislative and it's important to educate our readers and our young people about those important functions, as well as highlight the checks and balances each will play in running our local, state and federal governments. We're dispatching our news editor to DeSoto Private School Thursday, May 22 to speak before Mrs. Ashford's social studies class. With the presidential race being more important than ever, now is a good time to educate our young people on the importance of not only voting (or at the elementary school level, show them real life examples of voting), but our roles of government. It's a privilege this newspaper is able to educate people on not only dealings with city councils and school boards, but civics as a whole. Talk about newspapers in education. We're given hope that DPS would ask us to visit; with voter fatigue at record levels and approval ratings for government officials at all-time lows, it's comforting groups of young people would be open to learning about our important branches of government.
