The Material Girl lives large

First Lady Michele “The Material Girl” Obama is living large off the public nickel. Or, perhaps I should say the public millions.

It is estimated over the last year “The Material Girl” has spent $10,000,000 in taxpayer money on her vacations. According to a recent story in The Daily Mail White House sources claimed the First Lady spent that much on her vacations in the last year alone.

Everyone knows the Obamas took a recent vacation on Martha’s Vineyard which was inconveniently cut twelve hours short by Hurricane Irene.

So, while millions of Americans are out of work and gasoline prices soar the first family enjoyed a nine-day stay in a $50,000 per week rental.

The Material Girl has enjoyed 42 days of holiday in the past year including that $375,000 trip to sunny Spain and a four-day ski trip to Vail, Colorado, where she spent $2,400 per night on a Sebastian Hotel suite.

While she’s on these jaunts, according to the White House source, she gets expensive massages and “enjoys drinking expensive booze…She favors martinis with top-shelf vodka and has a taste for rich sparkling wines.”

On her August 2010 trip to Spain Mrs. Obama took along 40 of her best friends, and the U.S. taxpayer footed the bill for her 68-strong security detail, personal staff, and use of the presidential jet, Air Force Two. Per diems for the secret service team runs about $281 each per day which totals nearly $98,000 for the length of the summer break.

Use of Air Force Two, the Air Force version of a Boeing 757, comes in around $149,000 for the round trip, not including time on the ground.

Then there is the Christmas break in Hawaii in December 2010 where the Hawaii Reporter stated the tab was $1,500,000 which included:

$63,000 for an early flight to bring Mrs. Obama and the girls to Hawaii ahead of Barack. (She seems to like arriving before him.)

$1,000,000 on Mr. Obama’s return trip from Washington on Air Force One.

$38,000 for the “Winter White House” beach property rental.

$16,000 to rent nearby homes for Secret Service and Navy Seals.

$134,000 for 24 White House staff to stay at the Moana Hotel.

$251,000 in police overtime.

$10,000 for an ambulance to be on hand at all times.

Next came a ski trip to Vail in February 2011 where Mrs. Obama and her girls stayed at the Sebastian Hotel on Vail Mountain, where rooms run more than $2,400 per night for multi-bedroom suites.

Once again, transportation courtesy of the U.S. Air Force on Air Force Two. Upon arrival they were escorted by a motorcade of about a dozen vehicles, including 15 state and local law enforcement officers.

This brings us to the current summer holiday on Martha’s Vineyard in August 2011. The Blue Heron Farm estate, where the family stayed, rents for about $50,000 per week. Pretty fancy digs if you ask me.

While they are enjoying the ambiance the Coast Guard is required to keep ships floating near the property, the presidential helicopter and jet remain at-the-ready, and security guards will be on 24-hour duty.

This is according to “U.S. News and World Report”. Don’t forget, Michele and the girls flew down four hours before Barack on an Air Force jet even though they were traveling on the same day to the same destination.

Various sources have branded the 47-year-old-mother-of-two “disgusting” and “a vacation junky” who loves the lavish lifestyle to which her position entitles her.

Now, while most hardworking Americans can barely afford a week or two off work, she lives large at their expense.

Some people have snarked former president George Bush was always taking vacations at Crawford, Texas, but you have to remember the government didn’t pay to rent his farm.

Most reasonable people wouldn’t deny a President some time off with the family; after all, the job is stressful and everyone is entitled to a vacation.

What’s in question is the extravagant style in which these two enjoy their time off.

So, while “The Material Girl” enjoys extravagance, I guess she just feels “let them eat cake.” Now I’m sure for the first time in her adult life she’s really proud of her country since it’s picking up the tab.
