Hawks outlast Hornets 28-20 for Homecoming

RED OAK – In their previous meeting, Red Oak delivered Athens a punishing 42 - 21 defeat. While not characterized by quite the same dominating performance, the rematch ultimately ended up the same way. Red Oak was able to grind out a solid victory, winning their 2017 Homecoming game over Athens 28-20.

RB C.J. Palmer (15), was nearly unstoppable against Athens and carried multiple defenders with him into the end zone on each of his 3 touchdowns.

Red Oak found its leader in an underclassman: C.J. Palmer ran for 236 yards and also punched in three touchdowns. Additional support came from Preston Young, a defensive powerhouse who racked up 18 tackles.

The Hawks first touchdown came after a long Palmer rush, when QB Carson Forbes hit Hunter Smith on a quick slant route to go up by 7. The Hawks’ secondary played much better against the Hornets. The Hornets often tried to go deep, but the Hawks’ Jacob Proche led the secondary including an interception late in the 4th.

The win bumped Red Oak’s record up to 2-1. The defeat dropped Athens’s record to 1-2.

Red Oak’s next game is at Mansfield Timberview Thursday night, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
